Campaign Trail Statement – 21 June 2011

21 06 2011

Your Excellencies, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, Peace-loving Groups, Religious Bodies, Human Rights Activists, Propounders and Activists of Democracy, Ladies and Gentlemen.

We humbly apologise for the short notice given for this press conference.

In our candid view, the issues of democracy and peace are interconnected and there could be no better time of addressing these, especially when it concerns Ghana.

The Nana Konadu for 2012 Campaign Team from the onset has been raising issues of threats and acts of threats and intimidation against delegates who happen to the target group of this campaign. President Mills’ Campaign Team (GAME) has constantly been engaged in these acts of intimidation against the delegates aimed at frustrating the Nana Konadu 2012 Campaign Team which is enjoying enormous support. We have severally written to the General Secretary and the Party Chairman to complain about these issues which have fallen on deaf ears.

We have also written to the General Secretary asking for us to be included on the Electoral Committees of the Party which are responsible for ensuring a fair, unbiased and democratic election at the Congress.  This was treated with contempt as we received a letter informing us that our request would not be granted. The members of the Electoral College responsible for supervising the NDC Congress are largely members of the President Mills Campaign Team with the exception of Mr. Kofi Adams who as the Deputy General Secretary, has been made an ordinary member of one of the committees. This position is based on his role as the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC and not as per our request.

In the wake of this campaign, there has been a grandiose design of vile propaganda used especially against our candidate. These unfortunately have been given prominence by some agents of the media. Nana Konadu for 2012 Campaign Team has exercised decorum in our campaign throughout the country which has received maximum support from the delegates and the grassroots.

In the round-up of our seven region tour, which ended up in Brong-Ahafo Region, events clearly indicated to us that GAME was determined to do anything fair or foul in order to get victory on their side. This desperation, by our assessment shows they have lost and will stop at nothing to reverse our assured victory.

It is unfortunate to make public the following events but we are compelled by the events in Brong-Ahafo Region to mention them.  We have always notified the Regional Executives prior to our entry to their region with a formal letter, followed by a meeting with the Regional Executives.

In Brong-Ahafo Region this was done. However, the Regional Chairman, together with some Government functionaries like the District Chief Executives and Municipal Chief Executives in the Region, decided to take hostage of our delegates in their residences so as to derail the programme of the Nana Konadu 2012 Campaign Team by making sure that they physically prevented the candidate from meeting the delegates. By holding these delegates hostage, it is clear that the President Mills Campaign Team was infringing on Articles 6(b) and 6(c) of the

Election of NDC Presidential Candidate Guidelines which state:

6(b) “Equal opportunity, fairness and transparency shall be manifestly exhibited towards all contestants during the campaign and election process.”
6(c) “All contestants shall have equal and unfettered access to all regional and constituency structures and shall not be hindered by any party officer, member or organ during the period of campaign”

This however, did not deter the delegates from making their way to see the Nana Konadu 2012 Campaign Team late at night, not only to listen to her but to also pledge their support for her.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, believers in Democracy, we have called this press conference to urge you to give us your ear by also adding your voice and bringing pressure to bear on GAME to stop these acts of human rights abuses, intimidation and infringement on the sanctity of democracy.

The Team also observed that GAME is determined to let the voting take place regionally. This is an act of intimidation to force regions to vote regionally. This will result in each candidate knowing which region did not vote for him or her and we do not think this is best for our democracy and national unity.

Thank you very much.
